By tuning it down like this, you get a major third between it and the G string which actually helps in playing chords since now you don't have to reach the extra fret over to play a third, which is exactly why guitarists do the same thing. I've always had the idea that a 5th string (low B) is for getting a lower range, whereas a 6th string is for more chordal and melodic options. Tuning the C string to a B would move every fret down on that string, yes, but it wouldn't wreck your octave shapes all that bad really. Re-tuning your bass isn't taboo - Drop D isn't all that uncommon, and I'm sure you can find plenty of examples of bassists re-tuning for better options in their playing.
